Description

Surprised?

Yeah, I didn't expect to do this series either until I learned that no existing BD rip included the original stereo audio. Yes, apparently this is the only BD rip (to my knowledge at least) that includes the original mix, that actually was on the BD to begin with.

There are other details worth mentioning too, and I'm sure fans of Gunbuster won't be surprised that episode 06 requires some explanation. So, for one thing, both 05 and 06 are shot on 35mm film, so they are the only 1080p encodes. Episode 06 is technically lower since it's cropped, but it hasn't been downscaled in any way. So the sixth episode was intentionally letterboxed in pretty much all releases, except for the ending which was then unmatted to 4x3. This is a bit problematic, because the entire episode must be windowboxed on a modern 16x9 display. On its own, you could probably consider this respectful of the original intent; however, the ending shot used on this BD looks to be an upscaled analogue composite copy. The question then became, "is it worth it to compromise nearly the entire episode for this disgusting last shot?" In my opinion, no.

The raw BDMV came from ADC, and the uploader took the liberty of making his own extra that used a clean version of the ending (transferred in 16x9, creditless, and in perfect quality), and attached it to cropped version of the episode. One other note is that the standard version of the BD-BOX doesn't include the unmatted episode 06, so I could not include it here. I don't feel it necessary though, as it was never animated with that intent. Because the uplaoder had to re-encode the footage to make this extra, instead of using that version, I merely recreated what he did using the original source episode. The final result is an episode 06 that has a 16x9 ratio (1436x808), maintains the 2:1 ratio of the episode, and features minimal borders (padding it to 16x9), so that the episode can unmatte itself for the clean ending, which fills the 16x9 frame. It is perhaps easiest to explain what it looks like with these images:

Next up are the science lessons. The first four are 16mm transfers, so they're typical soft 720p encodes, but the fifth and sixth (4+1 and 5) are analogue upscales, so they are what they are. The BD also includes two brand new HD science lessons that, for whatever reason, use old analogue footage in the background that improperly decimated before being inverse telecined. I can't be bothered to fix it as it would require fairly manual efforts, so blame Gainax for not using their own HD transfer for an HD release. Being new, those last two science lessons are also unfortunately raw. I tried to find a translator for them before release, but ended up including them raw. Someone else is free to translate them.

The other details are as follows:

Video: H.264 10bit @ CRF17.5-18
Audio: FLAC
Subs: Aegisub based on REVO

4:3, 16:9

They are ratios, not numbers or pixels.
2 1/12/2015, 5:13:00 PM UTC+0 NeVe12p4wNeD
Anyway, are these rare or something?
3 1/12/2015, 5:13:00 PM UTC+0 RX782
When did I say they were? I listed 1436x808 to clarify that while it is 16x9, it is not typical 1080p.

No I mean you listed the aspect ratio in some ways that I don't like. That's all.

Those are clearly numbers and given that you're looking at them through a monitor they are also pixels, check your privilege.
8 1/12/2015, 5:16:00 PM UTC+0 RX782
Oh, the "x" operator? Deal with it.

As far as rarity is concerned, apparently the inclusion of the original stereo mix is not on any (or at least most) other BD rips.

Thanks, it's great to have anime with, IMO, best ending ever in such amazing quality.

Uh, I translated those science lessons forever ago. Here:

I have the 1080p REVO release.. is this better ? (other than the audio)

You're the man, RX. Thanks for this.

@nomakewan
Awesome. Good to see those getting translated.
@omarii
Yes it is.

Are you going to do Outlaw Star based EG?
23 1/13/2015, 0:08:00 AM UTC+0 RX782
There's already an ongoing OS release. I post about it on /m/.
24 1/13/2015, 0:18:00 AM UTC+0 nks
I wish I could find it in the catalog. ;__;7 That's good news though.

How is this torrent better than 330364?

I just compared Episode 1 between the two, and this torrent's version isn't as great quality.

^Since I apparently am thick when it comes to linking torrents, I'll just post the full link:

Please post comparisons then. I find that hard to believe considering these are higher bitrate at a more reasonable resolution (for episode 1 then). Obviously bitrate doesn't necessarily correlate with quality, but feel free to prove me wrong.

I dunno what means what is better in technical (if that's correct) regards, but this release just seems more grainer and lower quality in comparison to the other one which looks more cleaner if that makes sense.

@YoshiChao
Grain is not bad. If anything it is a sign of quality when it comes to very old anime. Although it's understandable that some people are annoyed by it, removing grain also harms the original image. In a sense, removing grain is like covering a food you don't like in ketchup.
31 1/23/2015, 7:51:00 AM UTC+0 YoshiChao
I understand the benefits of grain, it's just overall the image doesn't exactly seem better.

Like, there's so much grain its too noticeable in my opinion.
32 1/26/2015, 5:50:00 AM UTC+0 Bagel
The grain is good, and that torrent looks dead anyway. Only bad part is the slightly cropped EP6. This is the best version of Gunbuster anywhere. I've been waiting for this for 6 years

@nomakewan
I'll learn to typeset and make this
Do you plan on translating the Diebuster Science Lessons? Similar length
Then everything in the series would be perfect and complete
33 1/27/2015, 2:38:00 AM UTC+0 Bagel
RX: I just watched episode 3 and the on-screen text isn't translated. I know you aren't a translator so I guess the subs you used just didn't translate that part. They ARE translated on the EtB release on bakabt. They really add to the scene. Would you consider adding them? (I don't know if it is possible to do swapping on nyaa)

Any plans on Diebuster, Diebuster Science Lesson, Diebuster Movie, Gunbuster Movie, Gunbuster 2012 Science Lesson(From BD Box) Gunbuster vs Diebuster?

QTS was the only group i know who uploaded Gunbuster vs Diebuster Movie with English Subtitle(haven't tried it yet)

How's the subtitle timing on this? REVO who normally offers solid releases encode wise has fucking horrendous timing on his release. We're talking seconds off here. Same deal with EtB, KAA, R-R you name it. They all have awful timing in places which completely kills my ability to immerse myself in the series and any enjoyment I may have gotten from it as well.

Subs: Aegisub based on REVO

I hope that means you fixed the timing because otherwise this is a waste of 15 GB. I cannot stress enough how jarring it is when what I'm reading in the subtitles doesn't match up at all with what's happening in the video. It winds up feeling like two separate events are happening at once which completely divorces me from the experience.
38 4/6/2015, 4:38:00 AM UTC+0 RX782
I did a decent bit of work on the timing, because you're right, the subs were way off. They should be improved over REVO in this regard.
39 6/1/2015, 10:18:00 AM UTC+0 Kseniasolo
Does this have the 5.1 mix as well? Also, did it actually get a 5.1 remaster anyway, or is it just a shitty upmix?

Patch for ep.3:
-attached missing font
-added onscreen text in the intro from G_P subs (at the top so song lyrics are at the bottom now)
didn't change filename since it'd mess up the file order in the directory, just updated the CRC.
https://mega.co.nz/#!lURTiIbb!2HBnZJRy_1d3yb8qrCDxZ0NY0xb7Fy-npEyhUCVAoj0

may post patches for subbed science lessons later
41 8/15/2015, 3:35:00 PM UTC+0 Magistral
Patch for Science Lesson 06-07:
-added english subs
-styling and word choice/spelling should match previous eps
-edited from nomakewan's TL
https://mega.co.nz/#!wUxElYJa!po9B9WAVwtt2m1W-v_WJLcfHCpd3YnOHR1g-hqJm1_M

for both patches extract files into the same directory as the file(s) to patch.

should've fixed the dotcrawl and cropped science lessons 4+1 and 5 on that release by that way. would look a bit less crappy.

Patch for Specials 02-03:
-removed useless attached fonts
-attached missing fonts

Thank you RX for the overall best release of Gunbuster.

Thank you @Magistral for perfecting RX's release into something that literally has nothing I would change.

@Magistral: The patch for Science Lesson 06-07 download does not appear to be working.
46 1/30/2016, 5:31:00 PM UTC+0 Nickienator
The download works again now, guess I should've waited a day before saying something.
